It Came From The Porch : Causeway
The Causeway In crossing Mobile Bay, you've got your choice of the I-10 Bayway, up on stilts above the water and more of a straight shot. Highspeed four lane interstate, lots of traffic accidents. If you get out of your car up there, you're likely to get smacked by a jittery truckdriver. On the other hand, Highway 90 and 98 run along the Causeway, just above water level. Restaraunts and fishing camps, cheap hotels and the occasional strip joint line this stretch, along with Meher State Park and The Shoulder, a retreat for recovering drug addicts. It's sometimes used as a minimum security prison. I had a friend get sentenced to six months there for hacking phone codes with his Commodore 64. If you start on the Eastern Shore, you go down the hill and under Highway 31, coming in from Spanish Fort. The road sweeps around in a long curve to the left after the overpass.
When you come out of the curve, the road stretches off before you, over the water, headed west towards Mobile.
Some folks live down here. This house floods ever time there's a hurricane, sometimes when there's not.
There are a bunch of places to start out and get into the delta to the north. Aligators are common here. |
