It Came From The Porch : Journal Index

17 August 1999:

Hey kids. Sorry I've been such a slacker on the updates, but there's just not that much going on. The biggest big thing I have to report is that I'm drinking coffee again.

Actually, come to think about it, that is a big deal. I hated living without coffee. But I'm back at square one... one cup of coffee gives me a pretty intense buzz. Gotta work at it for a while before I'll be doing the eight cups a day thing.

So I'm hanging out, healing, getting better, putting on weight. Doc's still happy with my progress. Almost boring, ain't it? Ha, that's the way I like it! Coming up pretty soon on Day 100 post-transplant. They're gonna do a chromosome test and see if the Philadelphia chromosome is present, see if they cured me or what.

It's as hot as... uh, well, it's as hot as Alabama in August . So I stay inside a lot, read a lot. Been pickin' some on my bass, plinking a little on the keyboard, figuring out Otis Redding basslines (Donald Dunn ROCKS) and celeste parts from Buddy Holly songs.

What is it with awesome musicians getting killed by little planes? Both Buddy and Otis died that way, Buddy in a field near Clear Lake, Iowa, Otis IN a lake. Grrr.

Recommended reading: "Buddy Holly is Alive and Well On Ganymede" by Bradley Denton. My little brother got a copy of it in a grab-bag book giveaway, never read it. I swiped it the last time I was home cause the title was weird. Whatta ya know, it was great! Smiled the whole book through, occasionally laughing out loud. Afterwards, I HAD to have some Buddy Holly. He's been spinning in my cd player at least once a day since then. My dad had a forty-five of "Oh Boy" and "Not Fade Away." I loved those songs when I was eight, I love em just as much now. Freaks me out a little to listen to "Not Fade Away"... man, talk about nostalgia.

Pallas' Kittens Update: Alive, well and playful! Thanks to William at the Birmingham Zoo for the picture and report.

I miss my own kitten, dammit. Hopefully I'll get to see her soon. I'm trying to get someone from Mobile to come and pick my lame carless self up and take me home for the weekend. Maybe I'll even have something cool to write about.

Oh, and a quick note... poor Missy had surgery to enlarge her sinus cavity and is now a stuffy head achey type of girl. Soon we'll all be able to admire her lovely four-lane sinuses, but meanwhile she's feeling pretty punk. So I'm sending her thoughts of pain-free recovery and easy breathing. Hope you get better soon, girl!
