Mmmmm, Beth Orton CD... yummmmmmm! Man, what a week. Turkey day was fun. The highlight for me was riding Noah's (Sid's brother) tricked-out two-stroke quad. FUN when you hit that powerband, man! Doesn't steer anything like a motorcycle, however. That kinda threw me off. Then I stalled the damn finicky thing and left the chocke open and flooded it. Duh. I went down to New Orleans on saturday. Took the long way over, down old Hwy 90 through the Casino Zone in Biloxi and Gulf Port. God, what ugly places. Those casinos are packed OUT, no matter what day, what season. Lezlee and I got into New Orleans right at sunset. Walking through the French Quarter in that light was like drifting through a cobblestoned dream... light still in the sky, but dark down between the buildings, and quiet... we hit it just in the small space of time after the day people and before the night people. We went into Pat O'Brien's for an hour or so, and when we came out, Bourbon Street was thumping along in its normal (inasmuch as anything on Bourbon can be called 'normal') manner, at least five or ten degrees warmer than the other streets due to all the people packed together. We wandered down to the House of Blues to see who was playing that night, and ended up sticking around to shake our groove thang to The Ohio Players. Funky! For some reason, although the Quarter was packed saturday night, only about twenty percent of the people there were white. Hahaha, you should have seen us, the tight little knot of white folk at the Ohio Players show. I have no idea why what is normally an insanely diverse collection of people was predominately black last weekend. After the show, we ate at Mr. Gyro's - absolutely kick-ass Greek food down on Rue Decatur. Let's hear it for fantastic restaraunts that stay open past 11! Stumbling, tired, sleepy... we wandered into the Westin Canal Place and slept in a room that cost entirely too much... but had one HELL of a view out over the Quarter and the river. My first experience staying in a hotel that nice. Lezlee had to chastise me for rushing the desk and not waiting politely for someone to ask to help me. Sheesh. Oh well, uncouth back-country boy, that's me, ain't got no civilization no-how. :) Tuesday brought about another doctor's visit. Initially it went really well. My blood's looking good, my liver enzymes have stabilized and are trending down back to normal, getting better in small steps. So I felt pretty good about the whole thing for a change. Until Tanya called me last night. Seems like there's a possibility of a parasitic infection in my gastrointestinal tract. Dammit, this shit just never ends. So I get to do some stool samples and have some poor technician take a REALLY close look at what I usually get rid of as quickly as possible. Sigh. Downtown Mobile caught on fire last night! A building on Dauphin Street, down past Bienville Square, caught and burned. Not sure yet why it burned, or how much damage was done, even why it started. But I could see and smell the smoke from twenty miles out as I was coming down into the city from Bham last night.
So, in conclusion - life is pretty normal in all it's little abnormalities. Peace, kids. |
