It Came From The Porch : Journal Index

25 September 1999:

Ok, just one more cute kitten picture.

I'm still kind of amazed that these two get along so well. The phrase "Doesn't play well with others" has shown up on Lilu's report card more than once.

In other news: Trey ran sound for Comcast Cablevision.

Rob does some freelance work for our local access cable channel, lots of sports stuff. Normally he runs sound, but he asked me to fill in for him so he could fill in for the graphics girl. That's a switch, huh? Rob does graphics while Trey runs sound. Oh well, why the hell not? Something new to try.

Shall we take a look inside the truck?

This is Russ, our fearless leader. He's usually behind the switcher, calling out to the camera guys on the field and in the stands, letting them know who's currently on the air and who's up next, keeping things smooth and making sure we get maximum footage of the cutest girls in the stands.

This is my station, a little Mackie mixer. I've got mics on the sideline cameras, the cameras in the stands for crowd noise, a mic on the referee for penalty calls and signal from our voice talent up in the press box. Also got the audio for commercials and a cd player to juggle. It's not as much as it sounds like. It's taking me a bit to catch the rhythm of things, such as when to mic the damn ref and how to keep the crowd and sideline noise at optimum as the game flows back and forth.

That's Rob over by the graphics station. They've got a pretty cool graphics box, keeps a little scoreboard up in the corner of the screen, keeping up with the current down and yardage, etc. The rest of the stuff is for the guys running the instant replay and some camera control.

Drew and Jason, coiling up cables after the game. Drew's got his own video company and freelances camera work, and Jason grips and plays soccer.

I ran sound for two football games this week, Thursday and Friday nights, and it was pretty cool. Don't know if and when they'll need me again, but I'm game for it.

After the game last night, Bill locked his keys in his rental car out in the parking lot at Ladd Stadium - which is not, by the way, in the best part of town. There were cops all OVER the place just minutes before this happened, but of course as soon as we needed them they were gone daddy gone. Rob and I went back over to the house and grabbed some coathangers, and much as I would've liked to see Bill pop the window with Rob's big-ass MagLight, Rob actually managed to get the door open with a coathanger.

Go Rob! That boy can fix anything. Of course, sometimes he breaks it first... anyway, once we got that problem solved, we picked up Sid and headed downtown to Picklefish for some pizza and beer. Picklefish makes an INCREDIBLE veggy pizza, and the Anchor Steam was great, but I'm afraid that after working all day and then working the football game two nights in a row, I was tired. Beat. Kaput. Almost dead to the world. Crashed out HARD last night, slept late this morning. Finally got up and started cleaning this place. And here I am, taking a break from cleaning to write this, my latest entry. Got some Beatles in the CD player, dust in my nose, a kitten asleep against my keyboard and a cat asleep in a puddle of sunshine on the hardwood floor. Rob's downstairs messing with Linux or something and my little rock fountain is gurlgling over there in the corner.

Life's not so bad. :)
